ARG: LA Ghost Patrol: A Haunting in the Hotel
By: Susan Bell
Organization: Producer, Los Angeles Ghost Patrol
Event Genre: Paranormal/Thriller
Description
For one night only, the Los Angeles Ghost Patrol invites first time paranormal investigators to participate in a simulated haunting. Armed with real ghost hunting equipment, you will be placed in small teams to explore dark rooms and empty hallways, searching for anything out of the ordinary. LAGP investigators Tyler, Carol and Sam will guide you in an EVP session and instruct you in techniques to contact entities from the beyond. Bring your cameras & phones to capture personal evidence, then upload it to a website documenting the haunted WyrdCon experience.
The LAGP has conducted dozens of investigations in the Southern California area, some of which are showcased on their website laghostpatrol.com. They have appeared on TV investigating the Magic Castle and are committed to finding real evidence of the paranormal. Last year, as part of an alternate reality, the team stumbled into a centuries-old story of dangerous shadow figures controlled by a mysterious order. As the focus of the ‘umbra’ haunting her apartment, Carol began a blog at carolshaunting.com. The LAGP sincerely hopes this alternate reality does not reappear during WyrdCon, but asks that everyone be on the lookout for signs of the supernatural and evidence of the occult.
LARP: Hunter’s Moon: Ballroom Blitz
By: Kari Brewer
Organization: Live Effects
Event Genre: Modern Vampire/Werewolf
Description
Greetings, my dear friends, In order to thank you for your patronage, I will be throwing a celebration party. This will be a masquerade ball, to be held at a local convention that is running–a Live Action Role Play convention. Considering that costuming is not only encouraged there, but required, I thought it might suit for keeping some of our more unusual quirks discreet! Please, I welcome you to attend and bring as many friends as you desire–it has been wonderful to work with each and every one of you. Some drinks will be provided for you and your guests, and a card table set up. I do enjoy a game of chance now and again, don’t you? I understand some of you may be seeking information, as well. Particularly regarding members of a certain military organization… Several of my people will be attending this ball, and all will be available to offer you assistance with your quest for knowledge. Adieux, my friends, and don’t forget your masks!
Orbitus Mors
Hunter’s Moon is Live Effects’ newest chapter. Set in a modern world, it is a non-PvP Vampire/Werewolf game, focused on the Immortals’ struggle with humans who would see each and every one of them eliminated. By day, the villagers vote to hang those they suspect of lycanthropy, but by night, the Werewolves hunt, and they won’t stop. LARP: Deadlands: The Weird West
By: Blair Crossman
Event Genre: Weird West/Steampunk Horror
Description
The year is 1879, but the history is not our own. The guns of the Civil War are silent thanks to a tense cease fire between North and South. California is shattered by the Great Quake of ’68, a new superfuel called ghost rock is revealed in the flooded channels and buried in the cliff faces that loom above. Powerful Rail Barons strive to be the first to complete a transcontinental railroad, and the Great Rail Wars exact a bloody toll on an American frontier divided between not only the Union and Confederacy, but the Sioux Nation, the Mormon state of Deseret, and the Independent Commonwealth of California.
Amid the chaos, fortunes can be made by those bold enough to make their way West. These brave souls have more than plain old human violence to contend with. Something’s going on in the West, something downright nasty. Fear stalks the land like a hungry beast, and abominations from man’s myths and nightmares haunt the High Plains. Legends tell of ancient and powerful beings that thrive on the fear created by these horrific creatures. All around, the night grows darker and the shadows grow longer as evil twists the land.
Arrayed against the forces of darkness are the heroes of the Weird West: Grim gunslingers, spell slinging hucksters, brilliant mad scientists, and wizened Indian shamans stake their souls and fortunes on the battle against the evils of the frontier, and often lay down their very lives for the cause of righteousness and light. And sometimes, death is not the end.

LARP: Big Damn Heroes- The Best Laid Plans
By: Blake Mayer
Event Genre: Sci-Fi
Description
Big Damn Heroes is a LARP based in the Firefly universe created by Joss Whedon. The game is set roughly a year after the events of the movie Serenity, and features a ‘Verse where tensions between the Core planets and the Border planets are coming to a head after the Alliance has made moves to attempt to control information and consolidate power.
Big Damn Heroes is a medium combat, heavy RP game that welcomes new and veteran players alike. It is a boffer/Nerf LARP game, allowing both boffer/latex weapons and Nerf or similar projectile weapons.
Big Damn Heroes- Caught
It seemed like you were free and clear. You didn’t count on the Alliance cruiser waiting, guns trained on your boats. Damaged as your vessel is, there wasn’t a snowballs chance of outrunning them. You don’t even know if you could handle full burn, or if you’d just break apart trying.
So here we are. Caught. Trapped. With the Alliance(and all their big, big guns) asking some questions. They want answers. And unless you want to spend the rest of your life in an Alliance prison on Sihnon, you’d best either be clever with your answers, or have a damn good plan for getting out of there…

LARP: Sunken Places
By: Kirsten Hageleit
Organization: Live Game Labs
Description
What happens when a War is replaced with a Game?
Two warring tribes of Otherworlders, the Norumbegans and the Thussers, fought to the brink of mutually assured destruction. Before the final, terminal battle was joined, a truce was called. Both sides desperately agreed to another way to settle their differences: a Game. But not just any Game. To ensure fairness, both sides agreed that the designers and the players of this Game must be neutral parties, people unaware of the outcome’s importance, or of magic, or of the Otherworld. In other words; humans.
Now, each year, a few humans are lured to the Game of Sunken Places to participate in a series of challenges. Each Contestant is chosen by a side, kept unaware of the stakes, and is provoked to play by any means necessary. Each win reassigns territory in the Otherworld to either the Thusser Horde, or to the People of the Mound of Norumbega. And each winner is kept on to design the Game’s next round.
The Game of Sunken Places is always different. You, the player reading these words, will choose a role:
a “Designer” – humans who have perviously played – and survived – the Game. Faerie magic keeps them imprisoned until they can design another Game for other humans to play. They must create a new Game to win their freedom…
a “Builder” – Otherworlders – either a Norumbegan or a Thusser – who use magic to create the Game, per the Designers’ requirements. They must do their best to create a “Game” that favors their side, or they will suffer consequences…
an “Automaton” – magical constructs created by the Builders to act as challenges, characters, props, and set dressing in the game. An Automaton might be a femme fatale in one challenge, Excalibur in another, or a battleship in a third. But all are unaware of their temporary status…
or a “Contestant” – hapless humans that have been lured in to play the Game. They don’t know why they’re there, or why all these bizarre things are occurring. With any luck, they’ll soon find out….
In other words: Designers envision the game, Builders produce it, Automatons flesh it out or act it, and the Contestants decide it. In the few hours of this larp, a Game must be built from scratch, and played to completion. The fate of the magical world, and not a few lives, depend on you.
About Sunken Places
The Game of Sunken Places is a larp about larp. It is inspired by the Young Adult Dark Fantasy novel of the same name by M.T. Anderson. The creator, Kirsten Hageleit, was struck by the question: “Why do you larp? What roles do you choose? What do you enjoy most about live action role playing?” However, questionnaires are boring. Why not a game about a Game? Why not play out what you love about larp?
There will be a short pre-larp workshop for all to participate in, with some fun exercises to help choose your role, build your character, and evoke the spirit of the entire team and the game itself. Then, the Designers, Builders, and Automata will gather to create a series of challenges for the Contestants to play through.

LARP: Starship Valkyrie: Harm’s Way
By: Christian Brown
Event Genre: Science Fiction
Description
Starship Valkyrie is a science fiction-themed cooperative LARP. As a player you take the role of an engineer, scientist, starfighter pilot, officer, or medic. Each activity on the ship is represented by a task – puzzles for engineers, a fast-paced boardgame for pilots, and other challenges. The rules are simple, but can interact in complex ways. Any character can have a positive impact on the outcome of the mission. Step forward and join the ERS Valkyrie and defend the Earth Republic. United and Strong!
contact: info@starshipvalkyrie.com
About Starship Valkyrie:
Starship Valkyrie attracts a few different types of participants. First and foremost are LARPers. People who LARP recognize the format of the event and easily integrate themselves into what can be a fast-moving environment. Next come gamers of all kinds, who respond to the individual game-elements within the larger LARP and delight in finding creative ways to win against the enemy. There have also been a number of theatrical people who love exploring their role and the intensity of the simulation.
The game (I think of it as a game, but it’s more than that) teaches communication. So much of the simulation is about finding ways to analyze your situation and relate new information to the people around you. When they do that well, the players achieve victory. When they argue, hoard information, and forget to include their crewmates, the scenario becomes more difficult for them.
For the people who enjoy the simulation, it inspires them to explore new ways to contribute, to role-play more, and to dig down into the history of the world and the capabilities of their character. This is no different from any other role-playing game, I imagine, but it is satisfying to see people gradually develop a tighter organization, and participate fully, simply because they want to do well. These are real skills, and as a designer I’m learning as much as anyone else.
Starship Valkyrie: Harm’s Way
The Second Praezorian War is into its sixth month with no end in sight. The Earth Republic is building ships as quickly as possible, but the Praezorians are grinding their fleet down with a constant stream of attacks in all parts of Republic space.
The enemy is a juggernaut that can’t be resisted forever.
The defensive war isn’t working. In another six months the Star Navy will be ground down to nothing, and the Praezorians will be able to take Earth apart at their leisure. The war planners at Star Navy Command have put together a plan to launch an attack into Praezorian space. Much of Praezorian space is unknown, so the attack group will have to reconnoiter in force.
Valkyrie will be placed at the head of this attack fleet. Every advantage that the Republic can muster will be given to the Valkyrie for this desperate mission. The fleet’s goal is to find enemy installations, destroy them, and move on to the next target. The purpose is to make the enemy pay, in blood and material; to strike hard while we have strength left.
No attack has ever struck this deep into Praezorian territory and the mood aboard the Valkyrie is complex. Over the last few weeks a number of personnel have been given ‘temporary assignments’ elsewhere, most against their will. Officers have been replaced with new recruits in many cases. There is a new Star Destroyer building at the One Republic shipyard at Earth, not yet named. Some of the crew of the Valkyrie look on that with a gloomy cynicism and wonder if they are expected to return at all; if their replacement is already at hand.
The task at hand is a grim and deadly one, necessitated by the exigencies of war. We must expend our strength in an attack which wounds the enemy instead of simply delaying them. We must find where they are weak and hurt them. The enemy must be taught fear.

LARP: Veil Wars
By: Scott Walker
Organization: Brain Candy, LLC
Event Genre: Fantasy
Description
The world of Kumo is under attack! Demons from the supernatural realm of Kage are breaking through the veil, the barrier separating the worlds of the living and the dead. The only ones who can stop them are the yamabushi, spiritual ascetics who live high in the mountains of Kumo. Time is running out – will you walk the path of the yamabushi and fight the demons before it’s too late?
In “Veil Wars,” your job is to stop the grand demon Mikaboshi and his horde by closing the veil gates (portals linking the lands of the living and dead). As a yamabushi, you have the power to find the veil gates, shut them down, and fight any demons that make it across. Gates can open at any time or place at Wyrd Con, and demons may be encountered in the most unexpected places.
The structure of “Veil Wars” means you can step into or out of the LARP at any time during the convention, but you’ll definitely want to be around for the final showdown between the yamabushi and the grand demon Mikaboshi. The future of Kumo is in your hands!

LARP/ARG Hybrid: The Lost Amulet of Cranlor
By: Michael Minadeo
Event Genre: Medieval Fantasy
Description
During the dark days of the Etretian Empire, secret societies were founded to keep the glimmer of hope alive in the hearts of the citizens. Admittance to these groups was very selective, and special unique identifiers were created so that members could recognize each other in the general populace.
This system worked fine until one day when a soldier noticed two commoners exchanging jewels. He promptly arrested the individuals and confiscated their amulets. Furiously working to decipher the hidden code contained within, Wriig, evil general of the Etetrian Empire is on the hunt for any citizens who display this amulet.
You are part of the underground revolution that seeks to overthrow the tyranny.
At the start of the game, you will be given an amulet in secret.
Your goal is to find other members of the revolution, without revealing yourself to the guards who seek to crush dissent by capturing all who rebel.
After you have met and collected the necessary information from your fellow rebels, a hidden code on your amulet will reveal the location of the final rebel meeting.
This game will roam the entire area of the convention hall, and can be played while involved in other activities.
Spies and Treachery Abound! Will you be one of the few who stands up for freedom and fights? Together we can return to the peace of days gone by. Join the secret revolution!

LARP: THE LAKE
By: J Li
Format: Caldera
Description
Caldera is an alternative larp format for adventures in emotional sensemaking. In a Caldera game, the present is known from the beginning, but the past is generated through play as characters uncover together half-forgotten, half-repressed events from long ago.
Characters: Characters will be partially pre-generated, meaning they’ll be distributed on arrival and heavily fleshed out by players before start of game.
Once upon a time you had the answers and the glory of god. There was a crystal lake tucked deep within a pine forest, high up among the mountains, where you spent springs and summers together. It was far away from civilization. The day was a dance beneath a perfect sky, and night was an endless truth watched by crystal stars. You were young, and you were chosen, and you were inspired, and your art seemed as though any minute it would surpass human mortality and bring you to magic itself.
But that didn’t happen. Instead, you left, and did not return. You continued on, forgot about it, simplified it. (It was an outdoor experience. It was creative play with friends. It was a stimulating part of your youth.) You told yourself stories that you could control.
Now, you are finally ready to ask: What was the real truth of those summers long ago? What could have led you to give up something so important?
You thought you moved on, but you left a piece of your spirit beside the lake, and it will always be there—waiting on the shores of the crystal waters without you.
This is a game about ordinary people in the real, ordinary world, who loved magic and lost it.
Notes:
This game uses an extremely emotion-focused playstyle, with very little strategy or competition. All characters have past wounds that they have left unresolved, and will often find themselves feeling a certain way without knowing why. Part of the player’s creative process will be developing answers to those questions through a mixture of discovery and design. As a result, most significant events will be about self-discovery and sensemaking, not action.
Ages 21+ – Potential for mature themes but not guaranteed.

Description
With Special Effects and customer service at the fore front. Erden Odyssey offers it’s players an experience that not only is immersive, but truly drives to bring the characters into another world entirely. The main focus is the deities and their control over the world of Erde. Religion plays a heavy role in this class based and highly engaging LARP. The focus of this event revolves around the God of Nightmare and his quest to become more than just a bad dream. The players recently have uncovered the ancient artifact “The Soul Cube” which is rumored to be able to hurt the otherwise invincible God. The problem with that is the cube itself needs to be “charged” for it to work. Will the players succeed and stop the rogue Deity? Or will they succumb to their worst fears.

LARP: Live Jigsaw Opera
By: J Li
Description
Jigsaw Opera is a story told in a series of 12-24 unusual scenes. Players take turns choosing different elements of the scene and playing it out while others watch from the audience, and jump in to help as needed. With no coordination allowed and many elements randomized, the challenge is to make something coherent and build a great story.
For each scene, we will establish:
Setting: Players will take turns creating about 6 different vivid settings which will rotate in and out of use. Each setting combines random components, such as: “rich biodiversity” + “the flickering of a computer monitor” or “a graceful flock of swans” + “flames rising above a burning city”.
Characters: Which characters are involved in the scene, such as: “the hero” + “the villain’s sidekick”.Basic scene arc: A high-level basic idea of what’s going on, such as “he’s here to steal the ancient tomes, but the librarian emerges to stop him”.
Playing out the scene: Roleplaying the actual scene itself in detail, and discovering where it goes.
This is a highly cooperative shared storytelling format that combines elements of performance, improv, tabletop and larp.
Notes: No experience necessary.
LARP: Death in Valhalla
Run by: Mike Tice
Description
Death in Valhalla is a theatre-style live event that takes its setting from Norse mythology, with a special emphasis on the version embodied in Wagner’s Ring cycle of opera.
A death has occurred, and Odin/Wotan has demanded that the crime be solved. Armed conflict has been forbidden for the time being, making for an interesting interaction among the gods, elves, dwarves, giants, dragons, and other creatures present. While combat is forbidden, other challenges, involving drinking, arm-wrestling, skill, song, and poetry, are still available to the hot-blooded among you. The more calculating among you may try your wits at deducing the identity of the murder.
WARNING: There is a very strong possibility of Wagner being played at high volume.

LARP: Improv LARP
Run by: J Li
Description
Format: Improv Larp is a larp format that works exactly as it sounds: You play a larp. From scratch. With no planning.
Have you ever wanted to walk through a larp, watching it as a bystander invisible to the events, and then suddenly jump in to interfere? Perhaps you heard of a conspiracy in one place and want to warn the victims, perhaps you want to confound the dragon by kidnapping the princess first. Perhaps you just realize that the whole thing would be better if someone actually played one of the pirates everyone was afraid would attack the city.
Improv Larp is your chance to do this. It starts with a fewer initial characters beginning two plot lines. Players can watch as long as they want, and then jump in with a character of their invention, in a role of their invention. Tap in and out of play to alternately roleplay or observe as the invisible audience. Create unexpected twists or connections, or shore up an obvious weak point. Make up a new character if the situation suits— but switch back to the old one if someone starts looking for them! And, in classic improv fashion, conflict is resolved by consensus.
We encourage player to bring extra bit costuming they’re willing to share, so that it’s easy for people to incorporate and denote different characters as they go.
Requirements: Some improv and/or larping experience necessary.
